Call Me Old

August 26, 2021 at 8:59 pm (Uncategorized) (, , , )

I can remember when I was in JR High School certain subjects were taught. Home Economics being one of them. You learned how to sew, cook, clean up afterwards, and work in teams. You still Gym class where yes you were expected to participate in a game of dodge ball. We were lucky to get a few really good teachers who made learning fa fun experience.

In High school, we had electives we could take  such as Art, working on the year Book(taking pictures at lunchtime) learning how to put together the year book, Shop class, life Skills Class where you learned how to balance a check book, learned how to budget, fill out a job application, Driver’s Ed, Child development Class yes we learned where babies came from and how much work it would be to have one as a teen.

It saddens me to think that many of the classes I was able to take isn’t offered anymore. I understand with the pandemic the school year was on hold. I do not understand the reasoning behind no Algebra. Geometry, Calculus, Biology, classes that could help you get into College. I remember a time not so long ago, that if you took Biology in high school, you never needed to retake the class in College.

Offered also was Advanced Placement for students who are ready to attend college and get an early start to thier degree. There is still Trade classes the high school offers for a head start in your chosen career. I knew many students who attended one class at the high school and then went the rest of the day in advanced classes. I am glad the classes were offered because this is how I became interested in Nursing and I am still involved in my career today.

I hope when the kids were sheltering at home, parents were taking the time to teach thier teens how to balance a check book, changing a tire(could be important some day) how to cook, doing the dishes and clean up of the kitchen, doing laundry, playing championship basketball games, tag football, soccer tourneys. How fun with a BBQ at the end of the day to celebrate.

Here’s  to the start of a better school year where the kids get to be with thier friends, play hop scotch after school, throwing the ball around until dinner, hitting the homework, and enjoy being a child. Don’t blink now, you will graduating before you know it and getting out into this great big world full of opportunities.

Coffee Debate

August 21, 2021 at 10:58 pm (Uncategorized) ()

I recently read a good blog post about coffee. A lady was in the airport thinking about getting a a specialty coffee. There is only one person at the counter at the time. The debate comes from if you wanted a Frappuccino coffee do you wait in line to order it when let’s say there are two or three people behind you waiting patiently in line to order thier drinks.  Whose to say the next person in line just wants an Americana.

I think it would really depend on how much time I have to enjoy my Cinnamon Dulce late. There is always the chance your plane could have mechanical problems or the arriving flight could be late, then I would probably think about waiting in line to order my coffee. You have to take into consideration that the there is only one person manning the counter at the time. I think this is a good question of how bad do you really want your coffee?

I also think it is a different situation if you have a friend traveling with you at the time or are you traveling alone. You and your friend may not think anything more of waiting in line while chatting about your destination or your itinerary . If your are traveling to a new location, you may be caught up in the fun filled five days you could get away to relax from your hectic schedule.  I also know how busy the airport can be at times and if there is a line, I may not want to wait because I really didn’t need that cup of coffee. it is a really good question.

He’s here

August 18, 2021 at 9:09 pm (Uncategorized) (, , , )

One of the dearest young ladies that I know has just given birth to her third child yesterday. I have known her family for years and I am proud her family affectionately calls me Aunt Julie. I remember her setting on my dad’s(Grandpa John) lap when she was little watching Gumby with her.

The young couple have two younger children ages 6 and 18 mos. Mom will be kept very busy since mom still homeschools the oldest child. what a super crazy, fun-loving, adventurous family I am proud to be part of. dad posting on FB he just took a batch of  butterscotch chip cookies(yum), out of the over, come have some,  homemade ice cream, an invitation to dinner, or just hang out for the evening.

I cannot tell you how much it means to me to have your adopted niece name her son after my son Levi who passed away in 2007 in a tragic car accident. The family has meant so much to me over the past few years being in the two older siblings lives now I get to know the newest member of the family. I was able to see a picture of the new baby, what a beautiful addition to the family.

The Good Old days

August 16, 2021 at 2:07 pm (Uncategorized) (, , )

keeping up withy ever changing times isn’t something I am good at. I like the old fashioned way of paying my bills. I have always enjoyed visiting with the Customer Service people while paying my bills. I like shopping for my groceries instead of ordering ahead for pickup. Since I am the only one living here, I pump my own gas.

Don’t get me wrong, I understand families order ahead groceries, take-out, medications packets, home delivery services. Covid19 and now the variants has made people fearful to get back out into the community. With the recent increase in hospitalizations, vaccine debates, mask mandate debates it is a real mess out there. I can see why families are taking extra care for the family.

I tried online banking once- I never could get into my account . I once asked the operations manager at my bank to try and break into my account ( I am not kidding) she could not get into my account either. so you see, I am doing things still the old fashioned way. I also still like to go clothes shopping that way I can try on my garment instead of guessing what my new size is now and having to send the item back anyway.  I like reading a physical book. I want to turn the page and see what happens next in my cozy mysteries.  I support my community by  by shopping local, drive-thru quick meals, but love cooking at home. I don’t really get together with friends much due to our conflicting schedules.

Since I don’t have grandkids, I don’t go to the ball games, or dance recitals. I sometimes let my mind wander to what if I had a grandchild to spend the night and go for nature walks with. baking with grandma, painting rocks and hiding them in the forest, swimming in the lake, making tents out of chairs to sleep in. My life took another direction when I lost my son 14 years ago. I am perfectly happy with how my life has turned out.  Besides, half the fun to me is being able to tell your son his daughter walked for grandma today. I would miss out on that also.

Around The Corner

August 4, 2021 at 4:23 pm (Uncategorized) (, , )

The other day, my friend and I were talking about the differences between living in the city and living in a rural community. We especially concentrated on a local favorite book store, a coffee house, favorite eatery, favorite park to take the kids, a favorite lake. You get the idea.

Our discussion turned to your favorite coffee house. I know so many people stop by the Dutch bros. every morning for their cup of joe. There are nice outdoor cafes in my area that friends meet for lunch, the farmer’s market. concerts in the park on weekends. My friend and I enjoy getting outside for evening walks around beautifully landscaped neighborhoods. We get so many ideas on how to incorporate different plants and garden art into our design.

As I left to run a few errands, I kept thinking about what we talked about over coffee. I sometimes envy people who live in a big city. there are delis around the corner, your favorite coffee shop to meet with friends, Museums, nice Art galleries, famous parks to enjoy. I imagine the Malls are huge, exciting and I am sure take you 6 hours to go through. I let my mind wander a little more about the nice Historic neighborhoods to walk your dog, the endless beaches, the boardwalks, the quaint little shops to explore on the weekends.

It is a dangerous day dream for some who are not satisfied where they are in life right now. it would be easy to wish you lived there out of fantasy instead of being content where you are now. There are always two sides to every coin so they say those who live in the city can tell you all the downfalls to living there. the ones who live in the more rural communities can tell you the same thing. It can be easy to become dissatisfied with life, your job, your family, your….

Coming out of the post-pandemic is difficult at best for many. the eve changing mask mandates,  lower stock on grocery shelves, soaring gas prices, impatient patrons, short staffing, vaccine concerns, more parents opting for home schooling this year, growing hostile environments, inappropriate behavior at outdoor activities.

It is sad when a fan throws a water bottle at an opposing team player at a game just because he wanted to.

It is a different new world starting to emerge right now. People want to blame it on the pandemic. I think people are aggravated over a lot of things over the past year that has taken place. The mask mandate being one of them.  Proof of vaccine is starting to be implemented to go into bars, restaurants, your local gym, indoor games. Airlines are cancelling flights due to fuel shortages, unruly passengers, mask mandates, and the fights are on. People aren’t as friendly anymore, so many won’t even look you in the eyes.

I hope this phase of the post- pandemic gets over with soon. I want to hug my friends and family again, I want to attend a new year’s Eve party without fear,  I want to go to Pig Out In The park with friends, the fair, a concert, be able to go to friends homes for dinner and movie night again. There is so much of life we are missing out on right now because of the ever emerging variant strains to Coved. What is frightening is that is Global not just local. No one has a handle on this crisis.
